When you do something, not out of necessity, people definitely take note of it. I’ve been learning Tagalog even though most Filipinos know English. It’s been rewarding seeing peoples faces light up as i am probably stringing together one of the most grammatically incorrect sentences they’ve heard in awhile.
It definitely shows a degree of respect to them and their culture, and a deep willingness to connect. It says that you're not just there for the scenery, but you're actually there for them. Wishing you the best of luck on learning Dutch. Next year YOU will be talking to his girlfriend in Dutch 😂
Have you read listened to the audio book Nieuw in Rotterdam by Max Koedood? It’s on Spotify. My breakthrough in learning Dutch came when I decided to be lazy and just try to absorb it by listening. I found this book after listening to dozens of others and it’s the best.
The trick is to find something that matches your level that's also fun to watch/listen. People recommend T.V. shows for kids because of the simple language, but they are too boring for adults.
Totally! That’s exactly right. That’s why this Nieuw in Rotterdam book is good. Thematically it’s for grown-up expats, but it’s simple language and his narration is clear and slow. Of course, it’s not for total beginners. The initial lift to understand A1/A2 is something that you just have to power through with easier content.

Maraming salamat buddy :)
Willing to read your next entries in Dutch, then! Using Google Translate, of course.
