That feeling when everything else is closed, and you’re hungry or cold or need to use the bathroom, and then you see the konbini sign… truly “a lighthouse in the dark,” as you put it. Great piece, Pablo, traveling through East Asia, these stores never let me down. 😌
Family mart, Lawsons, or 7/11 were a stop for us several times a day in Japan. Although in Japan I didn’t see as many people hanging around. It seemed like more of a pop in and out thing which is an interesting difference. Maybe I didn’t pay enough attention?
I’ve noticed a difference between Taiwan and here in Okinawa where they’re much more like what you described: in, buy, out.
I’m flying to Fukuoka today, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for how they compare there. Konbini researcher, my mom would be proud.
FamilyMart is becoming my favorite. Lawson, ranks last for me. There is something about the branding just doesn’t sit right, especially the colors and font.
Got to love Taipei!
I was expecting nothing from it and got everything. Beautiful city!

Glad you liked it. I'll pass down the best advice I got: FamiChiki inside an egg sandwich.
Well written Pablo - haven't been to Taiwan yet but now looking forward to it even more!

The font did throw me off the first time I saw it. It seemed like it should be a gas station in Texas
